Roy E. “Pokey” Porter, age 62, of Elyria, passed away Friday, June 24, 2011 at his home surrounded by his wife and children.
He was born on August 8, 1948 in Grayson, Kentucky to the late Cecil and Nancy (nee Sparks) Porter.
Roy was employed for 28 years as a truck driver for Ross Transportation Services. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening and turkey shoots. He worshipped his wife, children and grandchildren and was most happy spending time with them.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Norma (nee Jones) Porter; sons, Roy Jr. “Dude” Porter, of Elyria and James “Reeber” Porter, of Elyria; daughters, Jennifer (Chris) “Shug” Bowen, of Wellington, Jessica “Jess” Porter, of Sheffield Lake and Jeneece “Neecie” Porter (fiancé, Brian Lukegord), of Lorain; grandchildren, Erika “Punkin” Bowen, Christopher “Jr.” Bowen and Austin “Cootie” Bowen; brother, Arlin Hall, of Elyria; sister, Eileen Porter, of Sandy Hook, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Royce “Gene” Porter and James Leslie Hall.

There are so many memories it is hard to choose one in particular. The Chenoweth and Porter families have spent hundreds of summer days at the softball and baseball fields. A lot of memories where shared around those dugouts and stands and I will cherish every one. Mr. Porter was a great friend and will be missed tremendously.

Fishing: I remeber getting up at 4am to go fishing for Walleye on Lake Erie with Dad. He would always let me steer the boat. I remeber going so fast and jumping waves that the whole motor would come up out of the water. We would always drop anchor and jump off and swim after we fished for a while. I remember his cut off blue jeans he would always wear. I remeber trying to cast out my line and accidently throwing my entire pole, rod, and reel overboard! He would never get upset.

turkey shoots: I remember being the only girl in a room full of guys at a turkey shoot. I remeber Dad buying a 4-10 shot gun for me cause it would be small and not kick. It had a fancy design engraved on its side, and Dad took an orange crayon and colored it in so it would be more fit for a girl. I would spend all my time there buying hillbilly hotdogs and candy. Dad would always bring home his winning targets so Mom could see what a good shot he was. He would also bring home huge slabs of bacon and frozen turkeys. He loved when Mom cut the bacon into big thick slices!

Ross truck: I loved sitting in my Dad's Ross truck. I loved to sit in the drivers seat cause it was so boucny. I would blow the horn. I loved pulling that string! I remember chatting on the CB. As a young girl I knew all the hot channels and CB lingo. I used to go sleep in his bunk in his bed. I would always clean his truck for him.( for a small fee of course..lol)

Music: I remember listening to bluegrass all the time with Dad. He got me hooked on it. I love Red Sovine, Johnny Cash, Ricky Skaggs, Ralph Stanely, Bill Monroe, etc... I can still see Dad sitting at the kitchen table plucking his air banjo on his belly!

River: I remember going to the River to wade in it. We would always catch crawdads from under the rocks. We would build fires on the river banks. We would fish all day. The night before we would go to Arlin's house and catch nightcrawlers. We would have our flashlights out in the rain cause that was the best time to catch them. We would bring them home and feed them leftover coffee grounds and old newspapers.

tractor: Dad always kept his lawn perfect! My kids would love to go visit PaPa to ride on his big John Deer tractor with him. He would let them drive. They loved to ride in the bucket with MaMa and Dad would move the bucket up and down like the "Power Tower" at Cedar Point. The kids thought that was the greatest. They knew PaPa would either take them for ice cream, give them a whole-lot-of dollars from his wallet, or take them to Certifed Gas Station for beef turkeys. LOL!

Strength: Most of all I will always remember Dad being the strongest man in the world. Dad was always so tough!! I always felt safe that my Dad would and could fix all of my issues and would never let anything happen to me or anyone in my family. He was my rock to lean on for everything!

Our family connection started with the boys and baseball. How fortunate we all were to share such good times. I (amy) will never forget that deep voice shouting out to "Dude" or "Bubba". To me, he was a great example of a man...strong, caring, giving, warm smile, headstrong :), loved his family beyond words. I was honored to have shared just a small portion of a great life. I remember when Roy and Dad were trying to load all them pigs up in the back of his truck and those pigs wrestled them all over the place. I remember when Roy, and I, and Old Man Walt, and Arlin used to go fishing on the Vermilion River and one time we wiped out all those boats coming down through there because are steering was broke. I just liked when him and Nay-Nays would come over and sit on the porch and talk. Roy is proud of all you kids and now he is up in heaven with PaPa.
